Does this sleeping dragon carry a gentle willow tree upon its back? Or does the willow tree with its magical waterfall have a dragon grown from its roots?* It’s that old ‘which came first the chicken or the egg’ question, only better because dragons!

The overall concept for this enchanting piece is loosely based on a previous, much larger dragon tree Melanie created years ago, only its very much its own entity here. This sleeping dragon contains a cut sapphire gemstone near its horns. The tree this time is a weeping willow with a kindly and content grin. A waterfall, seemingly trapped in time careens into a bubbling pool of water that streams off the edge of the display base (Of course, we’re talking fake water effects - this is not a real fountain!) Moss and stones cradle the tree, and a string of battery operated LED lights in soft white tone are laced throughout the branches for a nice glow. The fake leaves are the only elements not hand sculpted, as this would take an unreasonable amount of time and energy for the same effect at the end. But each frond of willow leaves has been trimmed, hand positioned, adhered, and painted to blend with the handmade branches.

The Dragon Willow including the flat base stands at 18 inches tall, 16ish inches wide, and the base is 11 inches in diameter. Made of polymer and paper clays, traditional papier mache, sculpting putty, fake water, moss and wood.

*If you follow TSB on Instagram or Facebook, you may think you know the answer, because, clearly, the dragon was sculpted first. However, Melanie had intended to create a tree before she thought of the dragon.
